Quiltcon Part II

Now for my favorites at Quiltcon in Austin, Texas.  I loved the colors of Quiltcon and you could see them in many different quilts. This first one is a mini paper pieced beauty made and quilted by Jen Sorenson.  The name Dazzling Diamonds fits it perfectly.

And finally, the back.  All of the quilting was done with matching thread colors which created a wonderful back.

Members of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild each made a block for, Graphic. I love all of the different interpretations of modern and graphic.  

Of course being in Texas, we had to have a pieced Texas in the Quiltcon colors.  Texas was made a quilted by Dana Michaelsen.

The quilting was amazing and I loved the large star in the negative space.

I was really drawn to the swirls in Texas and the lines in the negative space.

Rainbow Rocks was made and Quilted by Kathleen Baden.  It was the second place winner in Applique.  It is using one of my favorite lines, Tula Pink's Birds and the Bees.  

And my favorite.  I was so drawn to this quilt and I don't know why. Maybe it is my love of hexagons right now.  Apiary was made and quilted by Casey York. I love the applique shapes all placed in a very modern hexagon shape.

The bugs were amazing.

To top it off, the quilt was hand quilted in little hexagons.  I love it!

I had a great time at Quiltcon.  Next time I need to plan ahead and take a workshop or two!

Quiltcon Part I

I had a great time this morning visiting Quiltcon in Austin Texas.  I saw many different kinds of quilts and loved to see what everyone's definition of "modern" is. I am going to share some of the quilts in several posts.  I loved walking around and visiting all the booths, more on that later.  Today, I am going to share some of my favorite quilts.

The first quilt is Mountains Managed, Made and Quilted by Kristy Daum.  It was part of the Maasai Mara Fabric Challenge.

The second place winner in the Maasai Mara Fabric challenge is Not Quite a Shadow. It was made by Susan Shore and Quilted by Jessica Sloan.

Rainbows were very popular.  I really loved this small quilt, Over the Rainbow. It was made and quilted by Janice Ryan.

If you live or frequent Austin, you may recognize the following building, the Frost Bank tower.  It was made and quilted by Claire Jain of Austin.

Chevrons were also very popular.  I saw it in fabric, pattern, and quilting.  This mini is called Papercut, and was made and quilted by Rebecca Roach.It is a reverse applique where the top layer was cut away to reveal the rainbow underneath.

I really liked the next quilt and the use of text prints.  The direction of the lines of text was just perfect.  The stars were also beautifully done.  It is called, A Light in the Dark, made and quilted by Elizabeth Dackson.

I was really drawn to the colors of, The Marriage of Orange and Pink, made and quilted by Leslie Schmidt.

Here is another rainbow quilt done in butterflies. It was named, Hope Takes Flight.  It was made by members of the Faith Circle of the do. Good Stitches bee: Debbie Jeske, Debbie Martin, Chrissy Lux, Jennifer Spencer, Alecia Sharp, Rachel Hauser, Des Mecham, Evelyn Wells, and Linda Sullivan. It was quilted by Melissa Richie.

I loved the boxes and scrappy nature of, A Very Long Conversation, made by Rossie Hutchinson and Quilted by Bernie Olszewski. 

And who couldn't use a scissor wall hanging in their studio?  Pointless was made and quilted by Laura Bisagna.

As for scrap quilts, I love this one.  I think it is a great way to use up scraps. Makin Me Crazy was made by Victoria Findlay Wolfe and quilted by Shelly Pagliai.

Happy Valentine's Day!

It has been a crazy week, but I wanted to share our Valentine's Day gifts.

I made my husband a "Monster Cake" with his favorite beverage and boxes of candy. I took a box of 10 Monster energy drinks and tied 7 together for the bottom layer and 3 for the top layer.  I tied them up with some lady bug ribbon and then taped boxes of candy to the side.  He was thrilled and surprised with his gift this morning.

Unfortunately, he was pepper sprayed at the police academy this afternoon and it aggravated an old eye injury. He has been miserable ever since.

He surprised me with a dozen roses, chocolates, and a teddy bear at work.  I don't have a photo, but it was really sweet.

We haven't really celebrated Valentine's day since we were dating, but with a 4 year old in the house, it brings back the "holiday" magic.

Tradewinds

I started this quilt last summer and I used my own pattern to showcase all of the prints in Lily Ashbury's Tradewinds collection for Moda.  The quilt used one Tradewinds layer cake, a yard of Bright Sky (bella solid), a yard and a half of Persian Rose for the border, and half a yard of Vanilla Persian Rose for the binding.

The top was finished before the end of the summer and has been sitting in a basket waiting to be finished ever since.  I found a great deal on the Hancock's of Paducah website and bought the backing, binding, and borders. On super bowl Sunday I set my machine up to quilt wavy lines.  I decided to quilt  the wavy lines at an angle.  I am extremely please with the results. It took about 2 hours to quilt, and several evenings to bind.

I am thinking about creating a pattern for the quilt.  It takes awhile to create patterns, but I have good notes, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Valentine's Day Wall Hanging

I finally did it! I actually finished a holiday themed project, not only before the holiday, but the month before the holiday!  I used Sandy Gervais' line Flirt, by Moda to complete the wall hanging.  I paper pieced the letters using a tutorial I found on Sew Mama Sew. I printed the letters four to a page to make them smaller than the orignial project.  The hearts are made from a charm pack and a few extra charms so my patterns matched up.

THe back was pieced using some extra charms and a fat quarter of the large bird print on aqua. 

 

The wall hanging is now decoarting my undecorated office.  My goal is to make my office space happy and bright.

Work in Progress...

So this past week I finished my placemats and my table runner.

My Vintage Modern kitchen is almost finished.  I need to make a few pot holders and an apron to complete my set.

I also started working on a wall hanging for my office at work.

Table Runner

I have been working hard this last month to finish up all of my Vintage Modern kitchen collection.  I finished the table runner using the granny square quilt block.

I made three granny square quilt blocks and sashed them, and bound in my favorite stripe of the moment.

I put the table runner on the table with the placemats.

It may be too much, but I don't really care at the moment.  I love seeing them all together and I have been sing them every night to protect the table.
